Personal Statement
My name is Shaan Rafi and i am presently in my second year of studying FDA Graphic Design and
Advertising in Manchester. I have a vast amount of knowledge in the graphic design industry, including in branding and advertising. I am literate in Adobe software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and indesign; Microsoft Office; and Macromedia Fireworks and Flash.
Throughout my first year i have worked with live briefs with such companies as The High Growth Foundation and Mercedes SMART Manchester. With the clients, The High Growth Foundation, i had the opportunity to re brand their company, design several logo designs and deliver a suite of
Stationary. While working with Mercedes SMART Manchester i worked in a team with two other
members of my class to help design three campaigns to advertise their Manchester Dealership and SMART car. In addition i have also taken part in the 2010 Penguin Design Awards competition, where i was to design a new front book cover for Roald Dahl’s, James and the Giant Peach.
During the summer holidays i also had a two week work placement with Nokia in the design
studio, London. I worked with Mobile Phone Services Team, during my time i had the opportunity to attend design lectures, learn about different design disciplines and also work on my own
project where I was to create a web application for the series 40 Nokia phone. I was also
required to brain storm several ideas and review them with the design team. I also carried out competitor analysis, create user stories then design several flows for my web app with detailed visual designs.
After working with Nokia i also had a two week internship with The Noble Union which is a small design company based in London which specialise in creating IPhone and IPad applications. One of their largest clients would be with BBC. During my time with The Noble union i had a chance to redesign their icons and screens and create wireframes for the IPhone app they were working on at the time.
In this upcoming year i would like to complete my course and pursue a third year to complete my degree.
